“Do you pray?” my cousin asked me.

I paused.

“No, I responded. “I don’t believe in God. Well — I mean, I don’t believe God from the Bible. I do believe there are systems or forces at work that are beyond our comprehension. Why, do you pray?”

Steven smiled and replied, “Yeah. All the time.”

Surprised, I said, “I didn’t know you believed in God.”

“I don’t,” he shrugged. “I don’t believe in God I just pray to the universe. Or sometimes it’s my ancestors… it changes because it doesn’t really matter who you’re addressing… what matters is you’re bringing your heart and your intention into your prayers.”

I’ve always found it silly to say things out loud when no one else is around (I never really grew up with an internal dialogue) but recently it feels different when I let the words run through my body. It feels like even though no one is around, I am around to witness it and that’s what makes it worth saying aloud. :)
